February 5, 2005 Volunteer of the Year On behalf of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) players, coaches, administrators and parents, it is a tremendous honor to nominate Gail Ellison as Utah Youth Soccer's 2004 Volunteer of the Year. Gail began her journey with Utah Youth Soccer, no different than many of the rest of us, as a supportive parent. Not really knowing what she was getting herself into, Gail willingly volunteered to be the ODP '87 Team Coordinator for the 2001-02 season. Through trial and error, Gail realized there were a number of changes that desperately needed to be implemented that could help the entire program. Little did Gail know, she was creating a new position for herself - ODP Administrator. Gail took over the reign as ODP Administrator for the 2002-03 season. During this time, she implemented a separate budget for ODP, appointed a treasurer, and in her first year, gained complete control of the program's finances and was able to finish the year in positive working order. It was also during this time that Gail established the role of Boys Coordinator, Girls Coordinator and a Travel Coordinator that allowed the administration and communication within the program to be markedly improved. During the 2003-04 season, Gail's leadership and administration continued to be the backbone of the program. It was also Gail's mission to establish a scholarship fund that would afford those players with need the opportunity to participate. This scholarship fund enabled dozens of players to participate. Another highlight of the year was having 24 players from Utah being named to US Youth Soccer's Region IV Team Pools. It was clear to everyone involved, that this is a direct reflection of the program from the administration to the fields. In a modest statement Gail said, "It has been a privilege to work with a staff that truly has our player's best interest at heart; and with such a talented cast of young men and women who are dedicated to each other and this great program - what an incredible experience!" It is vitally important to understand that Gail dedicated thousands of hours during her tenure and was not compensated one dime. Her vision, commitment and determination helped to build Utah ODP into one of the most respected programs in US Youth Soccer's Region IV. For the above, and everything else in between, Gail more than deserves the recognition and honor as Utah Youth Soccer's 2004 Volunteer of the Year! |
