SLC District 7 Candidates Pledge to Save Open Space
& Oppose Rezoning Proposal

Primary Election Set for Tuesday

Five candidates in Tuesday's primary election for District 7 of the Salt Lake City Council have confirmed that they would vote against a proposal to rezone 13 acres of Salt Lake City's open space. Candidates Matt Dalton, Amy Jordan, Gordon Poulson, Soren Simonsen, and Danny Walz have pledged to oppose an application to rezone 13 vacant acres currently held in public trust by the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

These five candidates have thus taken positions in accord with the official position of the Utah Youth Soccer Association. At its last meeting, the Board of Directors of the Utah Youth Soccer Association voted unanimously to oppose the rezoning proposal and to support efforts to develop the property into a public park with multiple soccer fields.

A private developer hoping to acquire the property has filed an application with Salt Lake City requesting a zoning change from Open Space to Institutional.

Matt Dalton, Amy Jordan, Gordon Poulson, Soren Simonsen, and Danny Walz are among the candidates running to represent District 7 on the City's southeast side. The district covers parts of the Highland Park, Country Club, Liberty Heights, and Sugar House Neighborhoods. The primary election will held on Tuesday, October 4, 2005.
