Sparta U18 Girls - Las Vegas Turkey Shoot Finalist

Congratulations to the Sparta U18 girls, who recently returned as finalists from the 2007 Las Vegas Turkey Shoot. This years Women's U18 Gold bracket featured teams from California, Colorado, Nevada and Utah.

The newly formed U18 girl's team coached by Mansour Ariazand traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the 25th Annual Las Vegas Turkey Shoot. With this being the team's first tournament their expectations were a bit tempered, but coach Ariazand had high hopes for his team. First up for the girls was a back and forth ball controlled match against Utah H2O which ended in a 0-0 tie. Sparta's next match was against the very physical Corona Eagles team from Southern California. After showing this team was willing to work together and really play as a team in their first match, the girls scored a goal in the first half and added another in the second to seal the team's first victory for this new and promising team.

The second day of the tournament the Sparta girls went up against one of Nevada's top teams, Neusport FC 90 Green and the very skilled Utah Impact team. Both games where fast paced and the defense battled tough ending in 0-0 ties.

Going into the final game Mansour's team knew they needed to win outright to have a chance at a metal. The match was very competitive with both teams working hard to create chances to score. With several shots on goal and hitting the crossbar late in the first half the girl's teamwork and determination paid off with a goal to take a 1-0 lead. In the final half Sparta added a second goal to win their final match 2-0. The team finished the tournament not allowing a goal against or losing a game.

Mansour was quoted as saying he thought this was a special group of girls before coming to the tournament but his thoughts were confirmed after a great 2nd place showing. He is extremely proud of these girls and was very impressed with the way they came together as a unit. He is very excited to coach this team and looks for nothing but great things to come.
