Tragedy in Brazil Strikes One of Utah Youth Soccer's
Former Members

Matthew Knoop The Utah Youth Soccer Association and its members mourn the loss of Matthew Lawrence Knoop who was a hit by a vehicle in Catu, Brazil while serving a two-year mission for the LDS Church. Matthew was immediately rushed to a hospital in Salvador, Brazil where he died on Monday, April 21, 2008 as a result of his injuries.

Matthew resided in Park City before leaving on his mission roughly 10 months ago. He was a proud member of various club programs with Utah Youth Soccer, the Olympic Development Program, and he also captained his Park City High School soccer team to two State Championships. "Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Matthew's parents, family, and friends during this very difficult time," said State Technical Director Greg Maas.

Above being an exceptional soccer player, he also excelled in many other areas of life. He was a great student and a friend to everyone; and Matthew will be greatly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He was a true leader, and always understood the value in giving back to everyone through his love and kindness.

Brazilian authorities are still investigating the hit-and-run incident. Funeral services will be held on Monday April 28, 2008, 12 noon, at the Park City LDS Stake Center 2300 Monitor Drive, Park City, Utah, where friends may visit with the family from 10-11:40 a.m. prior to the funeral service.
