Kealia Ohai Named Gatorade
Player of the Year for Utah

Kealia Ohai of Alta High School is Gatorade's 2007-08 Utah girls' soccer Player of the Year, the company announced Thursday.

A sophomore who was the state's leading scorer, Ohai finished the season with 29 goals and 11 assists while leading the Hawks to an 18-2 record and their second straight Class 5-A championship. She scored seven goals in four playoff games.

Ohai also excelled academically. She maintains a 3.8 grade-point average. Off the field, she donates time at a local homeless shelter and has raised money for juvenile diabetes by participating in the annual walk-a-thon.

"Kealia is as well-rounded a player for her age as I have ever seen," Mike LaHargoue. the head coach at rival Lone Peak High. "She does it all. She passes well. She shoots right and left. She has a ton of energy. She's all over the place. . . . It's not fun to coach against her, but it is fun to watch her. These kind of kids just don't come around very often."

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., in football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field. The selection process is administered by RISE Magazine, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of prep sports journalists to determine the state winners.

Ohai joins her sister Megan Ohai (2006-07, Alta), Kelly Isleib (2005-06, Park City), and Katie Reineke (2004-05, East) on the list of Utah Players of the Year for girls' soccer.
