Soccer Community Mourns Loss of Soccer Legend Clive Charles
Our vast soccer community mourns the loss of Clive Charles, whose
dedicated commitment to soccer reached far beyond the soccer fields.
Charles had been battling with prostate cancer and died at home with his
family around him on Tuesday in Portland, Oregon. He was 51.
"I have known Clive and his family since I was 16, and I was very
fortunate to have played for such a great man at the University of
Portland, FC Portland and the Portland Timbers," said Technical Director
Greg Maas. "Clive has been instrumental in my life as a coach, mentor and
friend. There is no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be involved with
soccer today if not for him."
Clive Charles was best known for teaching life through the sport of
soccer. Clive will be sorely missed, but his teachings and passion for
the game of soccer will live on forever. Please take time to reflect on
what impact each of us have on the development of youth soccer in our own
respective communities.
