The 2003 State Cup Tournament has marked a changing of the guard. Longtime
State Cup Chairman Dan Gillespie orchestrated the fall portion of the
tournament and then handed off the reigns to new Chairperson Teresa Ortiz
for the spring.
President Paul C. Burke offered praise and thanks to Gillespie. "Dan has
left a wonderful legacy for the State Cup tournament. Under his leadership,
State Cup moved into a new era." Ortiz also thanked Gillespie for his
guidance and help with the transition. "This spring has been a learning
experience," Ortiz said, "But Dan has given me great advice and helped me at
every stage."
The State Cup Tournament is the culmination of the seasonal year for teams
from the Utah Youth Soccer Association's State Competition League, which is
the state's premier youth soccer league. The spring portion of the 2003
State Cup Tournament involves every girls' age group from under 12 to under
19 and boys from under 12 through under 14. The champion from each division
will represent Utah at the Far West Regional Championships, which will be
held in Hawaii June 23-28.
