Utah Youth Soccer Coach of the Month May 2007
Coach: Peter McGovern Current Team: Black Diamond U12, U14 & U15 Head Coach Coaching Experience: English Premier League Youth Academy, NCAA Division I and Division II (Coach of the Year Award NCAA Division II), ODP, New Zealand National Team, USYSA National State Cup Champions - Head Coach. Playing Experience: England Schoolboys and Youth International, NCAA Division I National Champion - 1996 St. John's University. Favorite Soccer Teams: Arsenal (English Premier League) and our Black Diamond U-16 Girls Team (Amazing!) - in the college game it is Notre Dame (or any team Bobby Clark is coaching!). Favorite Soccer Player: I am a big Steven Gerrard Fan (Liverpool) but I also think Paul Scholes (Manchester United) and Christiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) are world-class players. My favorite US Player is Clint Dempsey, who is very passionate and has the ability to score goals. Most Memorable Soccer Experience(s): Playing at Wembley and of course, winning the NCAA Division I National Championship. Coaching Philosophy: Total Player Development - I believe in developing players and ALWAYS staying true to the purity of the game, especially at the youth level. Helping players UNDERSTAND their role, their contribution and how it fits within the team concept is a very important part of my coaching philosophy. Favorite Movie: City of Angels (No I am not a softy) Favorite Book: The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho) Favorite Food: A good English Breakfast or something spicy - you can never beat a good chicken curry! Special Interests: I also run a company called Full Function Training (fullfunctiontraining.net) which endeavors to help people reach their health and fitness goals through a Boot Camp style training program as well as offering nutritional counseling - part of that company also specializes in a Soccer Specific Speed, Agility, Quickness and Strength program that includes functional training both on and off of the ball! Peter Says: Two things … "There is NEVER a wrong time to do the right thing! And - Soccer, like anything in life, is about reaching deep inside yourself and learning to be the best you can. Never accept mediocrity - not in soccer - NOT IN LIFE! |
