In His Own Words
Scott Maxfield, Candidate for UYSA Vice-President
As League 13 President (USA soccer formerly known as Arsenal
Alliance) for over the past 10 years, together with a wonderful board, I
have seen soccer grow in our area, from around 500 players, to now over
2200. Our league runs and oversees over 145 recreation teams, which
includes coed teams, and all girl teams. I have had the experience of
marking fields, purchasing uniforms and equipment, scheduling team pictures,
organizing league rec schedules, and yes, sitting across the registration
tables explaining programs to parents new to soccer. Our league continues
to grow, through the great efforts of recruited parent volunteers, who
recognize the need to put a quality program together for the children in our
area. I believe I know what it takes to be successful, and am in a position
to offer advice and counsel to the new league leadership. We put on
coaching seminars for our recreation coaches, and players. I worked closely
with the city planning commission, and city council in securing the
beautiful soccer fields now at South Jordan Park.
Utah Soccer Alliance (USA) Competition Teams. As part of our
desire to offer a complete soccer experience for all levels of play,
together with league 34 (West Jordan) we have combined our efforts to join
our competitive teams in state play. Along with Paul Brockbank (President
of league 34), we are members of a dedicated competition board that
together merged soccer ideas, and players goals, to what is now known as
the USA Soccer Club. I was involved early on, and continue to be a part
of the competition programs currently being offered to the 20 + teams
participating in state play. We will be hosting the first annual
Adidas/USA Cup tournament which will be held at the West Jordan Soccer
Complex in July.
Before moving to the South Jordan area, I was a member of the board
of league 11 (West Valley City) as secretary/treasurer.
Coaching. I currently hold a "D" license, and have been coaching
competetive and recreation teams for the past 15 years. There have been
seasons in which I have been coaching as many as 3 teams. I have not
avocated as being really smart, and would not recommend coaching multiple
teams!
I have owned my own business for the past 14 years. I understand
budgets and money matters. Along with the vast soccer experince, I feel
like I can contribute to the betterment of soccer in Utah. I believe in
developing the younger player, and feel like the future growth of soccer
in Utah rests with the need to be more recognized as "the entity" for
youth soccer. During my years as league president, I have seen many
soccer clubs come and go. We need to coordinate programs so both the
recreation and competetive player have the potential, and programs in
place to take it to the highest levels. That might be competeing and
winning the 4th division in an age group in state play, or getting the
game over so the after game treats don't get old!
