SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, April 4, 2012) – Real Salt Lake will give the Beehive State’s best young talent the chance to showcase their skills – and potentially enter the ranks of the RSL Youth Development system – on April 21-22, when the MLS squad will host tryouts for its RSL-Arizona Academy program and RSL-Utah Academy Under-17 summer team. The tryouts will be held both days at Mt. Jordan Middle School in Sandy, located at 9360 S. 300 East.

The full RSL-Arizona Academy staff – including Director of Soccer Martin Vasquez and coaches Freddy Juarez, Tony Bruce and John Galas – will be joined by RSL Head Scout Andy Williams and RSL-Utah U-17 Head Coach Greg Maas and Rob Karas to evaluate the talent on-hand during the tryouts. For this year’s tryouts, RSL invites players born between 1994-1997 to participate, and all players will be required to pre-register for the tryouts, including payment of the $50 registration fee (no walk-up registrants will be accepted). The Real Salt Lake Youth Academy tryouts will consist of several game practices and exercises designed to show the coaching staff the player’s range of ability, skills, speed and athleticism. It is an informal session, aimed at giving players the opportunity to display their talent and to obtain an assessment of their potential from a Real Salt Lake Academy Staff Coach.

Real Salt Lake Youth Academy has a professional responsibility to practice common courtesy in responding to individuals as quickly and efficiently as possible. After being determined a top player by the RSL Academy staff by performing well over the weekend, players will be invited back to participate in the RSL-Arizona residential academy and/or RSL-Utah U-17 summer programs.  Real Salt Lake Youth Academy staff will work together on determining the right mix of players based on strengths and weaknesses of individuals, group and team performance.

The crowning jewel of Real Salt Lake’s Youth Development endeavors is the RSL-Arizona Academy, the United States’ first soccer residency program affiliated with a Major League Soccer club. Based out of the state-of-the-art Grande Sports World training facility in Casa Grande, Ariz., the goal of the RSL-Arizona Academy is straightforward – to teach the next generation of potential Real Salt Lake players how to train and play “the RSL way” while providing them with a quality education both on and off the field. Headed by one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the country, the RSL-Arizona Academy is currently in its second season of play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, the country’s highest tier of youth soccer featuring 78 clubs fielding teams in both the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups.

The 2012 RSL-Utah squad will begin training in June and will conduct at least one practice session per week through August. The RSL-Utah U-17 team will continue its practice of scheduling as many training sessions as possible following the RSL first team, allowing the youngsters as much interaction as possible around the club’s professional outfit. In addition, some of the players will have the opportunity to volunteer their services at Rio Tinto Stadium during Real Salt Lake game days, providing yet another chance for these players to be immersed in a professional environment. In addition to the practice sessions, the RSL-Utah U-17s will also gather for several matches over the course of the summer, which will include intra-squad scrimmages and friendlies against local club sides and USL Premier Development League (PDL) reserve teams.
