Safety for our Players - Concussion Management

UYSA, in conjunction with Tosh - The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital, has developed a new and more effective concussion management policy for our members.  In compliance with a Utah law called the “The Protection of Athletes with Head Injuries Act” (UCA § 26-53-101, et seq.) which went into effect May 10, 2011 the following must be met in regards to concussion management:

1) An informed consent must be signed annually by parents and youth athletes acknowledging the risk of head injury prior to practice or competition

2) A youth athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion must be removed from play – “when in doubt, sit them out”

3) A youth athlete who has been removed from play must receive written clearance from a licensed health care provider prior to returning to play

Our previous policy met these requirements but the new policy provides added instruction and guidelines for parents, coaches and medical professionals.  We are also working on setting up regional concussion training sessions for clubs and coaches to better educate our members and create a safer environment for our players.  To read the updated policy click here.  To see the new clearance form click here.
