Grassroots In Person License Courses 

Grassroots In Person Course (FAQ)

To obtain a coaching license for Utah Youth Soccer League:

  1. Create a U.S. Soccer Learning Center Account
    https://learning.ussoccer.com
    (This is separate from your Utah club/team account, please use the same name, email and birthdate)
  2. Complete the Free Intro to Grassroots Course
    ~20 minutes, found under “Available Courses” in the Learning Center.
    This is required before registering for any other course.
  3. If you have not completed Safe Soccer Phase One – Please do so now.
    • This will complete requirements for Safe Sport and Concussion Certificate
    • Phase 2 and 3 are NOT required (do not pay for a background check with U.S. Soccer)
  4. Register for and Attend 2 In-Person Grassroots Courses
    • Required: 11v11
    • Choose one: 7v7 or 9v9 (either is acceptable, regardless of age group coached)
    • Courses must be taken as a set (see specific dates below listed as sets- 2 courses in one set)
    • Cost: $65 per course ($130 total)
    • Do not join multiple waitlists – only sign up for the course set that fits your schedule.
  5. Payment Instructions
    U.S. Soccer will email you payment links within 72 hours after joining the waitlists (check junk mail).
    You must be on both course waitlists to receive payment links.
    Only pay for In-Person Grassroots Courses. Do not pay for U.S. Soccer background checks (Utah covers this separately via Sports Connect).
  6. Get a Temporary “Pending” Coaching Status
    • Grassroots Pending CANNOT be added to your account until you are registered with your team (you can log in and see your roster)
      After paying for both courses, email jbreckenridge@uysa.org with:
      • Your name
      • Course dates paid for
        (No receipt needed)
  7. Waiver Information $25 fee – If no In Person Grassroots Courses are available for registration
    • Scroll to the bottom of the page for Waiver Steps
    • ONLY ONE waiver can be paid for – Fall or Spring but not both
    • Waivers are only good for ONE Season.
    • Waivers Paid during Jan 1-May 31, are for SPRING SEASON ONLY expire on June 1.
    • Waivers Paid during Jun 1-Dec 31, are for FALL SEASON ONLY expire on January 1

Temporary Option valid for ONE season only (fall or spring – not both) Please DO NOT pay for a waiver if you are paid in Grassroots in person courses, see step 5 above. The required coaching license must be completed before the next season to continue coaching.

To request a waiver:

  • Register with your club as a coach – MUST be completed before a waiver will be given.
  • Complete the FREE Introduction to Grassroots in U.S. Soccer’s Learning Center
  • Pay the waiver fee $25, click HERE 
  • Once payment is made – your coaching account in UYSA should be updated with 48 hours (weekdays only). Verify with your club registrar.
