LEGACY FIELDS PROJECT

Working to ensure the future of youth soccer in Utah

The Challenge

Each year, youth sporting activities throughout the state are losing access to fields as cities, school districts, and other field operators are faced with scarce supply and increasing demand and cost.

The Solution

The Legacy Fields Project is a major community initiative and long-term solution to a consistent and growing issue: the need to provide quality field space for youth soccer.

Making a Difference

Youth who have sustained access to fields for recreation makes for a more healthy and well-rounded community.

FAQ’s

The Legacy Fields Project aims to identity and obtain available land across the state — through donation, rent, or purchase — to create and build soccer fields.

The Legacy Fields Foundation formed an exploratory committee in 2014 to look at the lack of access to fields problem and identify a long-term solution. The committee met with key stakeholders in the soccer community as well as cities, school districts, and others to identify potential solutions.

In order to solve the problem, it became clear that the most likely path to increase access to quality fields was to partner with municipalities, school districts, private citizens, businesses, and/or other entities to obtain and build dedicated soccer fields.

After substantial review, study, and discussion, the board heard public comments and ultimately approved the Legacy Fields Project, which implements a $40 annual fee for competition players within UYSA.

The fees collected under the Legacy Fields Project are restricted funds that can ONLY be used for field development in the region in which they are collected. This ensures that fees are spent in the region they are collected, for the benefit of the players in that region, and for the long-term development of fields in that region. These funds, along with grants and other donations sought, will be used to create new fields throughout the state.

Landowners can participate in three different ways:

  1. Charitable land donation
  2. Bargain sale
  3. Discounted/Rent-Free Leasing

Landowners can enjoy the significant tax-break benefits by supporting the Legacy Fields Project and enabling youth in your community to have sustained access to space where they can enjoy the various perks of participating in youth sports.

To learn more about how landowners can participate and more details on the tax benefits, contact Michelle Wixom at UYSA.

We’re excited to work on our first Legacy Fields Project in Southern Utah in coordination with The Shivwits Band of Paiutes. We will be building 3-5 fields on property about 15 minutes outside of St. George. Learn More
